Cpl Budd, 29, died as a result of injuries sustained during a fire fight with Taliban forces in
Sangin, Helmand Province, southern Afghanistan. The incident occurred whilst on a routine patrol
close to the District Centre. Three other British soldiers were injured in the incident but their
injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

Corporal Bryan James Budd, 3rd Battalion the Parachute Regiment

Corporal Bryan James Budd was born on 16 July 1977 and lived in Ripon, North Yorks with his wife
Lorena and their two year old daughter Isabelle. Cpl Budd had been in the Army for 10 years, since
December 1995. He enjoyed a distinguished career, enlisting into the Parachute Regiment then passing
the rigorous selection process for 16 Air Assault Brigade’s Pathfinder Platoon, an elite unit
specially trained for long range reconnaissance missions.

Whilst part of that platoon he served in many operational theatres including Yugoslavia, Sierra
Leone, Macedonia, Afghanistan and Iraq. In May 2002 he passed his Section Commander’s Battle
Course with distinction, and was on the cusp of promotion to Platoon Sergeant. He was a qualified
Army Combat Survival Instructor, rock climber and freefall parachutist. In 2004 Cpl Budd was posted
to the Army Foundation College in Harrogate where it was his responsibility to help train young
future soldiers. He joined A Company, 3 PARA, in early June 2006 serving in Helmand Province.

A talented and hardworking soldier, Cpl Budd was the consummate professional. Universally liked and
admired, he was a shining example to those under his command, demonstrating great courage in the
face of adversity. He had a keen sense of humour and a natural ability for lightening the mood.

Softly spoken and gracious, he was never hurried or flustered and took everything in his stride.
Living in such a beautiful part of the world he loved the outdoors and would spend whatever time he
could there. However, his keenest passion was for his family of which he was incredibly proud. He
leaves behind his wife Lorena and daughter Isabelle. The couple were looking forward to the birth of
their second child in September.

Cpl Budd’s Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Stuart Tootal, said of him:

"Cpl Bryan Budd was an outstanding young man who had quickly risen through the ranks in the
Regiment. Extremely popular, he had a calm and professional manner that inspired confidence in all
that worked with him; a natural leader. Bryan died doing the job he loved, leading his men from the
front, where he always was.

"Bryan was proud to call himself a Paratrooper and we were proud to stand beside him. One of
the very best in all respects, he will be sadly missed by all his comrades in 3 PARA and our
thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time."

In a statement issued following the incident Secretary of State for Defence Des Browne said:

"I was deeply saddened to be informed of the death today of a British soldier and the injuries
of three others as they supported the NATO mission in Afghanistan. I wish to express my sincere
condolences to their families and friends. My thoughts are with them at this difficult time."

Cpl Budd leaves behind him a gap that will never be filled. A father, husband, son and a great
friend to many. He will never be forgotten.

Just an admirer

I never had the honour of meeting Mr. Budd, but from everything I've gathered recently, it's evident that he is one of those men that everyone wishes they could be, but just can't compare to. Much support and love from Canada, to you and your family, whom you had left far too early,in this time of sadness, but also immense pride. You sound truly like a stand up guy, Mr. Budd, and I'm beyond sure that everyone who's ever met you has changed lives now. Merci encore, mon cher ami, pour tous que vous avez nous donner. Adieu.

As I googled my name, I came across many articles about Bryan James Budd. I had never met the man but felt like I have learned about him through reading all of the things written about him, The world has lost another man destined for something bigger, for a reason that we cannot comprehend. The fighting in this world has to stop so that we do not keep losing men like this. My sympathies go out to those he left behind, leaving you with the only solace in that he died as most men would like to if the choice is not old age. We would like to go out protecting our countries rights and freedoms. God bless those who he left behind, but then again god has laready blessed you, having had Bryan James Budd in your lives.

i didnt know mr budd or his family but offer my whole hearted condolences. during a recent book fest held at rest home i work in, i came across mr budds citation and decided to read it out to the residents, many of which have also served and lost for our country, nearly all said they felt very humbled by the events and very proud of mr budd and all our forces abroad all wished me to pass on there love and condolences to his family. my grandads friend edward chapman also won the vc in fairly similar ways during ww2, i wonder if mr budd and mr chapman would say they were heroes? but then i suppose real heroes dont know they are. i have also shown mr budds citation to my daughter after she asked me why the soldiors where fighting after reading it she understood its about the man next to you, and now wants to join the army,at 11 she has a while yet! but i feel that if there are men and women like mr budd then i have less to fear i will never forget mr budds story and hope people start to relise what my daughter did soon thank you to mr budds family who are also real heroes and thank you to mr budd and all our men and women serving abroad every single one of you should be proud.

True Mucker G...

Bry just wanted to say that you are a legend mate, and I am very proud to have worked with you for nearly a year, such a short time, and I mind when in Iraq you would drive on any transport you managed to blag to come and see Lorena, and you would both sit in the desert and kiss haha soft lad... however you made a massive impression on me, we trained together in the gym, and we played squash. You would do anything to ensure you never lost, even barging me out the way etc.
Such a decent honest and very humble gentleman, and I mean them words from my heart.
I hope you recieved the Tuna you asked me to send out to you whilst you were on Ops? Only you could have won the VC as you are a true professional.

I mind you used to say to me Mucker G, ow and your Scottish accent was never any good mate, so keep practising.

And mind your favourite song whilst we trained? What time is it? haha ITS CHICO time!!!

Take care Mucker, until we meet again
